What is Good College Mathematics Teaching?

The concept of teaching proves that teachers’ teaching performance is a factor affecting students’ learning. Student’s success primarily relies on the hands of teachers and so as the success of one nation.

Teaching mathematics is hard because most of the students perceived math as the most difficult subject. It requires a deep understanding of the mathematics involved and how to create instructional contexts that lead students to engage with mathematics in meaningful ways. Hence good teaching strategies is required in the ways that would best facilitate their student’s development of mathematical understanding.

Extensive knowledge of mathematics a teacher must have in order to confidently explain concepts and processes to her students. This confidence boosts her credibility and helps students trust in her ability to teach them what they need to know.
Students learn in different ways. To help students learn the concept, teacher must be responsible in providing multiple ways (e.g. graphs, diagrams, words, data, manipulative) to solve equations and problems and uses those alternate strategies to help struggling students grasp difficult concepts. Teacher may also incorporate the use of technology. She let her students explore and enjoy math by extending it through technology. There are lots of software application that may be used in delivering the lesson that would help students figure out the topic. Some of these are Latex, Scilab, and Mathlab.
The best way to learn anything is to discover it by themselves by letting them learn guessing and proving.A teacher serves as a facilitator of learning, providing students with the knowledge and tools to solve problems and then encouraging students to solve them on their own. When students answer a problem incorrectly, she does not allow them to quit. She encourages students to figure out where they went wrong and to keep working at the problem until they get the correct answer, providing support and guidance where needed. It is also effective to look out for such features of the problem at hand as may be useful in solving problems to come-try to disclose the general pattern that lies behind the present concrete situation.
It is also best to engage students in working and learning together with others, typically in pair-wise group. It is designed to engage students actively in the learning process through inquiry and discussions with their classmates.
The teacher appreciates and recognizes students effort in solving mathematics. This will help to develop students’ self-esteem and will boost their confidence towards mathematics.
It is best to know effective strategies that will provide good math teaching in order to produce competent students who are active in nation building and responsive to challenges of 21st century.
